What is Regim?

Regim is my software tool for processing astronomical images.

Regim is not meant to replace complex image processing systems like Adobe Photoshop or others. It is meant as an addition to them. It makes some processing steps that are unique to astronomical images a bit easier. These steps are calibration (dark and flat), deblooming, registration, combination, color calibration, gradient removal and some more.

Installation and usage is at your own risk.

Regim is free and may be used in unchanged form. However if you find it useful please feel free to make a small donation. You can do this here via PayPal or send me an for my account details.

Supported file formats:

  • Uncompressed TIFF-RGB and TIFF greyscale (8 or 16 Bit per channel)
  • FITS-Files (greyscale, RGB, RAW)
  • Camera RAW files
  • JPG-Files

For reading camera RAW files Regim uses jrawio (http://jrawio.rawdarkroom.org) as standard.
As an alternative DCRaw (http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/) may be used.

Installation requirements:

Regim is completely written in Java and should therefore run on any plattform with a Java runtime environment (JRE) Version 1.8.0 or higher. It was tested under WinXP, Windows 7, Windows 10 and several Linux installations.

You should have at least 1 GB memory, 4 GB or more are highly recommended.

Installation and start

Unzip the file regim.zip on your harddisk. In the folder regim you will find a file regim.cmd (for Windows) and a file regim.sh (for Linux and Mac OS) Call from this folder the corresponding file for your operating system.
Please also read the manual which is available here for download also.
Note: Please be aware that you need a Java runtime environment version 1.8.0 or higher on your computer. Is this not the case, you can download it at http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. The use of OpenJDK is not recommended
Important for users of 64bit-Windos systems: If you use Firefox to download the Java runtime environment from the site above it seems that at the moment you always get the 32bit version. Therefore I would recommend to use InternetExplorer for the download and make sure you get the 64bit version.

Notes for the current release

The following changes have been made:
  • Functionality for scaling masterdarks
  • Repair defects now also available for RAW color files
  • Debayering performance increased
  • Functionality to mirror images in X direction
  • Black and whitepoint for screen stretch are now displayed abouve the sliders
  • Bug when reading Fits with value range between 0 and 1 fixed
  • Migration to Java 8
  • When reading compressed TIFFs a warning is shown

  • It is now possible to register images on a comet or asteroid.
  • Batch conversion from JPG to FITS is now available.

02.01.2015 Version 3.2

The following changes have been made:
  • The size of the field of view (FOV) in plate solving and color calibration can now be calculated from the FITS header if the header conatins the required data.
  • Star catalog data for plate solving and color calibration can now besides from NOFS also be downloaded from VIZIER. This is much faster and more reliable.
  • The gradient removal tool that has been quite slow in the past works now much faster.

The following changes have been made:
  • Autostretch can now be applied directly after loading an image.
  • Preprocessing has now a separate step for image normalization.
  • Platesolving and color calibration are now able to use coordinates from FITS header.
  • Photometry is now able to use WCS information from FITS header.
  • Photometry allows now to set aperture, gap and annulus manually..

  • A fine option for setting the black and white point has been implemented.
